Local World War II veterans will be flying to Washington, D.C. in spring 2014 to visit the memorial that is dedicated to their service thanks in part to members of Northeast Credit Union. For one month, each of the credit union’s 15 branches located throughout the state offered stars for sale for a $1.00 each, with all proceeds going to support Honor Flight New England. In all, members donated $1,228; enough to send four local veterans on an upcoming Honor Flight.
The one-day trip to the World War II Memorial is offered at no cost to veterans by Honor Flight New England and is often described by the military heroes as the one of the best days of their life. Honor Flight’s philosophy is that, “Since America felt it was important to build a memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veterans, the Honor Flight Network believes it’s equally important that they actually get to visit and experience THEIR memorial.”
Northeast Credit Union members clearly share that philosophy. Andrea Pruna, Vice President of Marketing for Northeast Credit Union noted, “Our members were eager to support veterans and Honor Flight New England’s important mission. Many members told us that they were thinking about their parents and grandparents, remembering their service to our country, and wanted to help honor and thank World War II veterans.” Joseph F. Byron, founder of Honor Flight New England, stated, “We are so appreciative of the support from Northeast Credit Union members. Their donations are critical in making Honor Flights possible for our local veterans. Our heroes aren’t asking for recognition. It is Honor Flight’s position that they deserve it. This program is just a small token of our appreciation for those that gave so much for our country.”
